Due to the ongoing heat wave and drought, there is a significant risk of forest fires in the canton of Zurich (Level 4 out of 5). Accordingly, a strict fire ban is in effect in the Sihlwald, on the grounds of the Sihlwald Visitor Center, and at the Langenberg Wildlife Park.

At the otter enclosure in Sihlwald, Wildnispark Zurich also offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the hidden underwater world of the River Sihl. The aquarium is home to native fish species and endangered native crayfish.

A special highlight is the popular viewing window into the otter enclosure, which gets flooded by the Sihl when the water level is high. Thanks to a new, large magnifying glass, visitors can spot water snails, caddisfly larvae, or tiny freshwater copepods here, gaining an even clearer awareness of these tiny underwater creatures.

Watching otters eat

With a little luck, you might even spot the otters. They swim by from time to time to check whether the automatic feeder has dropped another tasty morsel into their feeding basket.

Listen, read, marvel

Over the past few weeks, the Wildnispark Zurich Foundation has completely renovated the exhibition and added new elements: For example, at an audio station, an otter describes its daily life, and informational signs illustrate the ecological relationships within this sensitive habitat.

Better Access to the Sihl Thanks to #hallowasser

The redesign of the underwater viewing area near the otter enclosures marks the first public access point to the Sihl River in Sihlwald as part of the Canton of Zurich’s #hallowasser project. Additional access points to the Sihl River in the Zurich Wilderness Park area are in the planning stages.
