Research database

The Wildnispark Zurich maintains a research database containing information on research projects, data sets and publications.

For researchers

Researchers turn to our research coordinator for the coordination of their research idea and for information on any necessary exemptions for research in the Sihlwald Conservation Area at least four months before the start of the project.

Research in the Wildnispark

Find new knowledge

«Knowledge» is one of the five guiding concepts set out in the mission statement of the Wildnispark Zurich. To that end, the foundation promotes and supports research and monitoring projects within the park that focus on gleaning new insights into the relationship between humans and nature.

Research/monitoring

Here are our current research projects. Scientific bodies are invited to submit their ideas for projects.

Geoinformation

The Wildnispark Zurich Foundation operates a geographic information system (GIS) as a key foundation for researchers and strategic management decisions.

Geographic information systems are employed to collect, edit, maintain, analyse and visualise spatial information. Reality is depicted in the form of models and broken down into objects in different layers. Alongside their spatial characteristics (geometry), all objects also have extensive content properties (attributes). The objects in one or more layers can now be related to one another and analysed to create new spatial information. The results of the analysis are mostly presented in the form of maps.

Objectives and Tasks

The objectives and tasks of the GIS in the Wildnispark Zurich are

  • to support the park administration in planning, implementing and documenting administrative tasks,
  • to provide visitors to the park with all the information they need to plan their visit and find their way around,
  • to coordinate research in the park in spatial terms and provide researchers with the data they need,
  • to document developments in landscapes and nature over the long term (monitoring).

The GIS of the Wildnispark Zurich was started in 1994 at the University of Zurich’s Department of Geography. The geodatabase has been systematically expanded since 2003.
