In order to protect the lower Sihl valley and the city of Zurich from flooding, the canton of Zurich is building a relief tunnel between Langnau am Albis and Thalwil, through which water can be diverted from the Sihl directly into Lake Zurich.

Tunnel dilling works will start in mid-April; the excavated material will be transported away by rail. For this reason, the section of the S4 between Langnau-Gattikon and Sihlwald station will be closed to passenger trains from April 15 to December 24, 2024. During this time, rail replacement buses will run twice an hour between the two stations with a direct connection to the S4. However, the SZU recommends allowing a little more time for the journey to and from Sihlwald.
